Wow Molly…thank you for this! We had similar experiences in so many ways. I really resonated with feeling like hope was dangerous during my son’s NICU stay. Holding onto hope felt like the scariest, most dangerous thing in the world during that time. The what-ifs were never ending.
Now that I’m on this side of it I’m really surprised by how little conversation there is about these traumatic experiences. I think a lot of this comes from the lie that somehow this was our fault or feels scary because of the unhealthy comparison among mom culture. I found this conversation so encouraging and relatable. Thank you for putting this into the world!
I'm so sorry you had a NICU stay for your baby too. It's a terrible experience. Hope is scary!! I'm thankful you found solidarity here, though. My prayer is for this podcast to reach the moms who need some other moms saying "me too" to the experiences that can so easily become full of shame. Glad to encourage you a bit in your motherhood journey today!
I shared your excellent podcast on my Healthy Families Substack. I completely agree with you that the numbers of parents experiencing trauma and shock around their children’s birth is underreported.
